Athens International Airport S.A. was established in June 1996 in the form of a partnership involving the Greek State and a private consortium led by the German company Hochtief Aktiengesellshaft. This consortium was the winner of the tender for the airport building contractor held during 1991-1993 under a BOOT scheme (Build – Own – Operate –Transfer).The said corporate entity, entrusted with the management of "Eleftherios Venizelos" airport for 30 years, constitutes a pioneer co-operation - between the public and private sector - and the first internationally, developed with the aim to construct a major airport (Shareholder Scheme)
