Hamburg Port Authority (HPA)
The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) was established in October 2005 in the course of the merging of the port-related competencies of various Hamburg authorities. Built on the “one face to the customer” principle the HPA is the central contact partner for all inquiries arising with regard to infrastructure, navigational and operational safety and port security, property management and economic conditions in the port. The divisions of the Hamburg Port Authority responsible for strategy and planning draft their development plans for the port of Hamburg taking into account the interests of the port industry, business, trade and neighbouring residents.
The aim is to realise re-structuring and development projects, traffic route and berth extensions as well as in-time development, preparation and occupation of port extension areas in line with market demands.
-Port strategy:
Besides providing infrastructure facilities, the HPA secures, develops and enhances the strategic competitive position of the port on the basis of market and competitor analyses by offering attractive customer services, by establishing long-term customer relations, by imposing adequate usage fees and by representing Hamburg’s interests in dealings with the EU, among others.
-Safety in shipping:
The harbour master’s division of the HPA is in charge of ensuring overall navigational safety and a smooth flow of traffic on the waterways. It maintains the land-based radar chain, provides vessels with information on traffic channels and berths and advises and directs shipmasters from the Nautische Zentrale (Vessel Traffic Service Centre). If applicable, a pilot is sent on board.
