Airport surcharges ''should remain optional'', AOA

Release Date: 2009-04-21

Airport surcharges should remain optional, a leading body has claimed.

James Fremantle, industry affairs manager at the Air Transport Users Council, commented that consumers should not be forced to use travel hub services such as drop-offs.

He added that he is not concerned with surcharges, as long as they remain optional, such as those in operation at London Luton Airport.

Mr Fremantle explained: "At Luton, the drop-off fee is optional and you can drop off for free via the car parks and get a free bus in."

He added that passengers travelling through this hub also do not have to pay to go through security.

The expert went on to say that he does not think consumers understand why some airports charge them for certain services.

According to a news story from Telegraph.co.uk which was published earlier this month, London Luton is set to introduce a £1 payment for those dropping people off at the terminal.
