Carlisle Airport work ''could begin in a month'', AOA

Major work on a regional airport could begin within the next few weeks, according to a source.

Andrew Tinkler, owner of Carlisle Airport, told the Cumberland News that redevelopment of the travel hub could start in the next month.

He said that plans for the £25 million overhaul are progressing, with the due diligence process about to get underway.

Mr Tinkler told the newspaper: "If all goes according to plan, work could start within a month, though we still have to talk to some of the farmers about certain issues."

He added that he hopes to have the revamped airport fully operational this time next year.

An upgrade to the runway and a selection of new facilities and buildings are among the proposals set to be implemented.

Earlier this week, a report by Leicestershire County Council ruled that work to expand East Midlands Airport would only have "minimal" impact on the environment.
