Aerospace industry welcomes Environment Chief's low carbon vision comments, A|D|S
Release Date: 2009-11-10
Matthew Knowles, spokesman for A|D|S the UK's aerospace, defence and security trade organisation, stresses the positive impact of the UK's Sustainable Aviation initiativeReacting to Lord Smith's comments setting out a low carbon vision and calling for more engineers to achieve it, Matthew Knowles said: "The UK aerospace industry is constantly developing technology to address the impact of flying on the environment. For example, an aircraft today
produces 70 per cent less carbon dioxide than its equivalent 50 years ago. Furthermore, the Sustainable Aviation initiative, of which we are a member, has set out a CO2 roadmap demonstrating how the industry will meet the threefold rise in demand for air travel in the UK by 2050 while simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions back to 2000 levels through the use of new aircraft materials and designs, alternative fuels and innovative systems.
"Our engineers and expertise are making a positive impact in exactly the way Lord Smith describes. We welcome his support despite his previous opposition to airport expansion. This vital increase in business from airport expansion funds the investment in research and development that is required to make this technological progress."
