Release Date: 2010-01-14
64 innovative products and concepts from big and small companies from 13 countries have been submitted to the Joint Initiative Hamburg – The place for aviation for the Crystal Cabin Award 2010. The initiative launched the prize for innovation in the field of aircraft cabins in 2007 and this leading trade fair for aircraft interior fitting will take place from 18 to 20 May this year at the Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH (HMC) fairgroundsThe Award has become internationally recognised as a seal of quality and a marketing instrument. For many companies it serves as both an incentive and a reward for their efforts. The trophies are awarded in six different categories: Passenger Comfort; Industrial Design / Interior Concept; Greener Cabin, Health and Safety; Material and Components; Entertainment and Communication; and, for the first time, University.
“The concepts and products that have been submitted to us provide a superb insight into how the world of aviation could look in the future. This is the goal of the competition. The Crystal Cabin Award is conceived by the City of Hamburg, recognised all over the world as a competency centre for aircraft cabins, as a means of improving cabin comfort in civil aviation and of promoting unusual innovations”, says Walter Birkhan, President of the Crystal Cabin Award e.V. and Coordinator of the Joint Initiative Hamburg.
Some of the examples of the extraordinary variety of ideas of the entries include a wearable device with climate control and communications technology surrounding the passenger’s body like a cocoon; a jacket that replaces the aircraft seat, attached to the cabin walls with belts and buckles, designed to make the flight as comfortable for the passenger as sitting in a hammock; a mobile aircraft seat for physically disabled passengers, which awaits passengers at the check-in counter and allows them to roll directly into the cabin with freedom of movement, and a flexible, expandable lavatory facility providing increases in both comfort and hygiene.
The Crystal Cabin Award 2010 is sponsored by Airbus, the Aircraft Interiors Expo trade fair, the magazine Aircraft Interiors International, Bishop GmbH, DIEHL Aerosystems Holding GmbH, FERCHAU AVIATION Division, HTG Media Hamburg, and Jetliner Cabins.
