Short-term flight forecasts predict weak growth for European aviation, EUROCONTROL (European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation)

Release Date: 2010-02-05

First low-cost, then business aviation, have returned to growth in recent weeks. The largest market segment, ‘traditional’ carriers, is hovering just below 0% growth and looks set for a return to growth in January 2010
The total number of flights in Europe has tracked 2006 for most of the year, but with further cuts in the winter 2009-2010 timetable, November and December 2009 will have much the same volumes of traffic as in 2005.

Calendar year 2009 should have 6.6% fewer flights than 2008, the largest annual decline on record.

For 2010, the forecast is for a weak 1.7% growth, driven by an anaemic economic recovery, low yields, continuing scarcity of credit and a high oil price. There appear to be both upside and downside risks to this.

Even 2011, though the uncertainty is wide at this range, is forecast to grow at a below average rate of 3.2%.
