Fifteenth anniversary of centralised flow management , EUROCONTROL (European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation)

Release Date: 2010-04-27

Air traffic management history was made on April 27, 1995: for the first time on the European continent, flow management was done centrally
The Central Flow Management Unit (CFMU) officially took responsibility for tactical air traffic management in French airspace - a function which had previously been carried out by CORTA, the Cellule d’organisation et de regulation du traffic aérien.

Over the next twelve months, the remaining four European Flow Management Units in Frankfurt, London, Rome and Madrid were progressively transferred to the CFMU.

The first transfer was the most challenging - “a remarkable operational and technical achievement”, according to the CFMU’s Director at the time, Dirk Duytschaever.
