Ramboll lead consultant for redevelopment of Pulkovo Airport

Release Date: 2010-06-09

Ramboll has been appointed lead design consultant on the complete redevelopment of Pulkovo Airport, St. Petersburg. The project represents one of the largest PPP projects in Russia and one of the most ambitious aviation projects currently underway in Europe. The contract catapults Ramboll into the big league of international airport consultancy.

Northern Capital Gateway – a consortium consisting of Fraport AG, Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide, VTB Bank Europe plc and Copelouzos Group – won the 30 year contract tendered by the city of St. Petersburg for the concession, modernisation and running of Pulkovo. The one billion euro project will see the creation of a new terminal building and pier, new landside facilities including a hotel, business centre and office developments, as well as extensive refurbishment to the existing infrastructure.

Ramboll supported the consortium’s winning bid with a comprehensive technical offering that reflects its many years’ experience working on terminal buildings and airport infrastructure around the world. Initially Ramboll will be in charge of the project’s first design phase, which includes developing and improving the landing area, designing a new passenger terminal as well as new hotel and business facilities. Over 200 Ramboll employees from different business units in Russia, Denmark, the UK and Sweden will be involved.

The St. Petersburg contract will put Ramboll among the top five engineering consultancies in the world within airports and aviation. Group CEO Flemming Bligaard Pedersen therefore sees it as a real takeoff for the company’s airport design business that will lead to other big projects in the highly globalised airport business.

"This significant contract win confirms our ability to successfully compete for landmark projects. We have developed a high degree of airport specific expertise within specialised fields over the years, and a multidisciplinary project of this magnitude is a perfect opportunity to bring all these together. Winning this contract will undoubtedly give us opportunity to bid for other significant airport-projects around the world," says CEO Flemming Bligaard Pedersen.
