European Airfreight Hub, Fraport AG

Release Date: 2009-08-14

On July 20, 2009, the new European Airfreight Hub at Frankfurt Airport was officially inaugurated

With the new hub, DB Schenker consolidates its import and export units - which previously operated at separate locations - directly at Frankfurt Airport. At CargoCity South, airfreight from around the world is bundled, temporarily stored and prepared for onward transportation.

Optimally equipped

The 15,000 sq m handling area on the ground floor encompasses three zones of 80 sq m each for dangerous goods, a 300 sq m storage area for valuable goods, and a 110 sq m temperature-controlled warehouse, which is directly accessible from the truck ramp via a climate control door.

The most modern and efficient airfreight hub in the worldwide DB Schenker net also features X-ray equipment as well as several palletizing lines for consolidating and deconsolidating airfreight pallets and containers.

Well-conceived design

On the upper floor, the building features a 10,000 sq m warehouse for aircraft spare parts of up to 15 meters in length and up to four metric tons weight. Eight meters high, the warehouse was built without any supporting pillars to ensure larger parts can be placed in or removed from storage without any problems. Heavy loads are lifted onto the upper floor from outside the building.

The new freight center currently employs 200 people. The investment volume was €50 million.
