Russian satellite for the Asia-Pacific region

Release Date: 2009-02-04

Russia’s space industry leader JSC «Academician M.F. Reshetnev Information satellite systems” will build a geostationary telecommunication satellite system for the Indonesian operator PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk, one of the major telecommunication providers of the Asia-Pacific Region. The TELKOM 3 satellite will be launched into orbit by mid 2011.

Nikolai Testoyedov, General Director and General Designer of Reshetnev praised the choice of the Indonesian telecom operator during an exclusive interview with RussianAvia.net in Moscow. “The technical advantages and performances of our satellites are among the best in the world... We have developed new satellites on the basis of Express-1000 (light) platform with the mass of up to 1,600 kg with a 15-year lifetime and, the most important, with cheaper launch costs!” he said.

The TELKOM 3 Indonesian project will built based on the new medium-class platform «Express-1000H» and will carry 32 C-band transponders and 10 Ku-transponders or equivalent to 49 TPE. The project covers development and in-orbit delivery of the satellite creation of augmented ground control segment, plus training, internship and technical support to the service operator during the satellite operational life.

Reshetnev’s well-round project, together with the Company’s reputation and expertise in the field of space engineering, won the December 2008 tender against strong international competitors like Orbital Sciences, Thales Alenia Space and Space Systems/Loral .

It is not the first international tender for Reshetnev. Earlier in 2008, the Reshetnev company signed a contract with the Israeli communication satellite operator SPACE-COMMUNICATION LTD for the delivery of the AMOS 5 satellite system. Hopefully, it won’t be the last either.

China, next?

Last November, Reshetnev actively participated in the China Aerospace Show in Zhuhai and is looking forward to space cooperation with China.

“During our recent trip to China, we met with our partners from the Chinese State Academy of Space Technologies. We discussed current joint programs and suggested new platforms for improving technological level and commercial appeal of communication spacecraft. We also discussed opportunities for creating new generation of satellites for mobile communication. Roscosmos (the Federal Space Agency) has potential for this joint production that China is interested in. All our possible relations will be in the framework of Russian-Chinese bilateral relations,“Testoyedov told RussianAvia.net.

He is confident that these actions will, as a first step in the road towards collaboration, remove current bureaucratic obstacles between the Russian and the Chinese space scientific community.

“I have a very clear feeling of speaking a common language with the Chinese scientific community. Their space industry is rooted in the Russian space industry, so there is no doubt that our common understanding and our common interests will make our current cooperation very fruitful both for Russia and China,” Testoyedov concluded.
