Lufthansa Technik and RDT: breakthrough in airborne telemedicine, Lufthansa Technik Group
Release Date: 2009-04-01
Tempus IC™ connects via Mobile Access Router (MAR)
At Aircraft Interiors Expo 2009, RDT Ltd. and Lufthansa Technik AG are jointly presenting a solution for integrating the latest telemedicine equipment into private and commercial aircraft. The integrated product combines the latest technology of both parties - RDT’s Tempus IC™ with the Lufthansa Technik Mobile Access Router (MAR) - allowing a complete embedding of telemedicine services into the communication network of private and commercial aircraft.
In the case of an in-flight medical emergency, Tempus IC™ allows a non-medical user to collect and transmit eight key vital signs routinely measured in an ER (emergency room) - including blood pressure, pulse, blood oxygen, breath gas analysis and heart condition - to a ground-based medical response centre, so passengers can get the best remote diagnosis and treatment support available.
The unique combination of diagnostic quality medical data with integrated two way voice and streamed video capability maximizes the doctors’ effectiveness, ensuring a rapid and accurate diagnostic impression and enabling them to advise even users with no medical experience on potentially life saving activities.
The MAR functions as the main interface to the aircraft’s communication network and ensures the best possible connection to Tempus IC™ including both Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet connection methods. The MAR automatically establishes a satellite connection with bandwidths from 64 kbps and beyond as soon as a Tempus IC™ call is placed; all other on-board connections will be interrupted to ensure the highest priority for the health care device.
“This cooperation in the telemedicine sector shows the rising importance of health care availability for private and commercial aircraft users” said Andrew Muirhead, Director of Lufthansa Technik’s Cabin Innovation Centre. “Besides the most important feature of having access to life-saving medical assistance, this technology also brings economical benefits such as the prevention of expensive consequences due to incorrect in-flight health diagnostics.”
Graham Murphy, RDT’s CEO, said: “Whilst Tempus IC™ is important to airlines as a decision support tool that helps pilots to make critical diversion decisions, it also provides reassurance to everyone involved in an onboard medical incident with the knowledge that you can receive the highest quality of in-flight medical assistance available today. The technology is a perfect fit for Lufthansa Technik’s new Cabin Innovation Centre and we are thrilled to be working together.”
RDT and Lufthansa Technik jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which covers the technical integration of both products. Furthermore, it outlines the intention to establish a dealer relationship in the near future.
RDT’s device is being demonstrated at Lufthansa Technik’s booth 6D65 in hall B6.
