Travellers making trips to the UK with a major carrier could benefit from a new bonus scheme.

American Airlines is offering up to 50,000 advantage miles to those taking journeys to Britain during the spring or early summer.

In order to qualify, travellers must make a round-trip between the US and the UK before June 30th.

Those doing so with an eligible first or business class ticket will receive 50,000 miles, while those in economy class will be awarded 25,000.

Rob Friedman, president for the firm''s AAdvantage marketing programme, commented that the initiative is to say thank you to consumers.

He said: "With the 50,000 bonus miles for travel in First or Business Class, customers can book a free round-trip from North America to Europe."

Taxes and fees associated with award travel are not covered by the deal.

Recently, American Airlines revealed that it is renovating two of its departure lounges at Heathrow.
