Flybe has chosen to expand its services by creating a base at London''s Gatwick Airport.

The regional airline will begin a new route from the capital to Dusseldorf, operating three times a day on Monday to Friday, once on Saturday and twice daily on Sundays.

In the move 33 jobs will be created, with the airline saying it demonstrates its ability to grow in tough economic times.

Mike Rutter, chief commercial officer at the carrier, said: "Flybe is gaining a reputation as an airline that bucks the trend in these challenging economic times and this announcement is a confident statement by the Flybe Board in our ability to continue our growth."

He added that Gatwick will now become one of the airline''s most important airports and Flybe will become a key player at the London hub.

The airline has recently estimated there will be an eight per cent increase in travel over Easter as people holiday across Britain and Europe.
