A public consultation on Southend Airport has been extended after local residents showed great interest in the new scheme.

The previous closing date of April 9th has been extended until May 15th, giving those in Rochford and Southend the chance to give their views.

John Lamb, councillor for Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, says it is "absolutely essential" that as many people as possible are able to view the document.

"It deals with employment opportunities, environmental and infrastructure issues, and an expanded airport with new facilities," he adds.

Keith Hudson, portfolio holder for planning and transportation councillor for Rochford District Council, says he is concerned that not all residents have got a clear picture.

He adds he has had queries about night flights from local communities, but says the airport currently has capacity for more than 900 night flights a month.

Earlier this month thousands of copies of a questionnaire for residents were sent out again, asking for their views on the development, after many households claimed they did not receive them, the Southend Standard reports.
