Successful start for new Lufthansa Technik facility
Lufthansa Technik Sofia has launched а second line for base maintenance services for Boеing and Airbus aircraft types with the arrival of an Airbus A320 of Ural Airlines. Lufthansa Technik Sofia, a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik AG (80%) and Bulgarian Aviation Group (20%) was opened in October 2008 and has already successfully accomplished two IL2-checks on Airbus A321 from Lufthansa. The third one will be finalized in the coming days. From July on Lufthansa Technik Sofia will include in its portfolio maintenance services for Boeing 737 Classic and Next Generation.
“Since the official opening of the company on the 28th of October 2008 our employees have shown great performance”, said Bernd Freckmann, Chief Executive Officer of Lufthansa Technik Sofia. “The turnaround time has been reduced remarkably with each aircraft due to constant learning from best practices as well as through the effective and strict implementation of lean principles – and not least due to the great support from other LHT facilities.”
In the ramp-up phase of the new facility Lufthansa Technik Sofia has profited from the standardization of processes carried out in the Lufthansa Technik Network. In the first five months of its operations the MRO-company has already done – beside the IL2-Checks – additional base maintenance and painting services for the following customers: Lufthansa CityLine, Bulgaria Air, Wizz Air, Sky Europe, Anadolu Jet, as well as for the lessor GECAS.
When the full capacity has been reached, more than 350 highly skilled workers will perform heavy base maintenance checks on up to 24 short and medium range aircraft a year. In addition to this the company will offer line maintenance services. Lufthansa Technik Sofia works under EASA-Part 145 of Lufthansa Technik AG.
Lufthansa Technik together with Bulgarian Aviation Group has invested more than 20 Mio. Euro in the refurbishment of the facility, which has 12.500 square meters of floor, the dock facilities, tooling and working materials as well as in the training of the employees.
