“Important emblem of the German aviation history”

With the handover to Cornelius Dornier of a replica of the classic Dornier Merkur aircraft painted in the historic colors of Luft Hansa, Lufthansa Technik has helped to preserve German aviation history. The revolutionary all-metal aircraft developed by aviation pioneer Claude Dornier had been operated by Deutsche Luft Hansa between 1926 and 1935 and from July will be one of the top attractions of the new Dornier museum in Friedrichshafen.

Having been reconstructed in Hungary, the replica aircraft was painted in the original colors of the Luft Hansa fleet at the end of the 1920s by a team of retired and active paint specialists over a period of a few weeks and almost 600 man-hours. The original of the Dornier Merkur with factory number 88 and tail sign D-1103, known as Silberfuchs (Silver Fox), was deployed in the service of Deutsche Luft Hansa AG on scheduled flights within Germany from September 1927.

At the handover of the faithful replica of the original in the Lufthansa Technik paintshop in Hamburg, Cornelius Dornier, project manager of the Dornier Museum, was thrilled with the single-engined high-wing monoplane with its wingspan of almost 20 meters: “Lufthansa Technik has made a wonderful contribution towards preserving an important emblem of the history of aviation in Germany.”
