Snecma announces today the launch of the new European research program called OPtimisation for low Environmental Noise impact AIRcraft (OPENAIR), bringing together representatives of the European aviation industry.

As part of the 7th Framework Program, OPENAIR is a four-year program with a total budget of 30 million euros financed with 18M€ by the European Commission. Snecma (SAFRAN Group) will be leading a consortium of 47 partners including European major aerospace industries (Airbus, Aircelle, Bombardier, Dassault Aviation, EADS, GKN Aerospace, ITP, Messier-Dowty, Rolls-Royce, Snecma Propulsion Solide, Volvo…), Research Institutes and small businesses.

OPENAIR aims to deliver a 2.5 dB source noise reduction, beyond the SILENCE(R) (1) achievements. The program will focus on the validation of new technologies, such as introduction of electronically assisted solutions, the application of improved Computational Aero-Acoustics, new affordable absorbing materials and airframe noise solutions. It will also include the identification of applicability over the product range as well as the analysis of benefits for different market segments. OPENAIR’s multidisciplinary approach and composition is suited to the projected integrated, lightweight solutions.

According to Eugène Kors, OPENAIR program coordinator: “Reducing noise from aircraft operations perceived by airport neighbouring communities is a major challenge facing the aircraft manufacturing industry and other stakeholders in the air transport business. OPENAIR will develop solutions that can play a significant role in continuing with the previous generation effort, enabling future products to meet the ACARE (1) noise goals and improved noise levels of the current fleet.”

By adopting an integrated aircraft approach based on the latest developments in active and adaptive technologies, flow control techniques and advances in computational aero-acoustics applied in all areas, OPENAIR will deliver the breakthrough that is needed to achieve the 2020 ACARE goals.

(1) SILENCE(R) was the largest European Commission research project dedicated to aircraft noise reduction. Combined with innovative low-noise operational procedures studied at the same time, SILENCE(R) has achieved an impressive 5 dB noise reduction. It has met its goal of validating large-scale noise reduction solutions concerning the engine (aeroacoustic design, active technologies), nacelle (aeroacoustic design, innovative acoustic treatment, active noise control), and airframe (aeroacoustic design).

(2) ACARE is the European Commission’s Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research, grouping all stakeholders in the European aviation industry: representatives of the EC and member-countries, industry, research centers, airports, etc. ACARE drew up the Strategic Research Agenda to address objectives for the 2020 timeframe. From the environmental standpoint, these objectives include cutting perceived noise in half (i.e. – 10dB), an 80% reduction in oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and a 50% reduction in carbonic gases, all at acceptable costs.
