Roadmap to recovery for UK government launched by high-tech industries, 英国航空航天公司
Release Date: 2010-07-17
A|D|S, the UK’s AeroSpace, Defence and Security trade organisation today (Saturday) - ahead of the Farnborough International Airshow that begins on Monday 19 July - published its suggested programme for the UK Government to tackle key national requirements around the economy, national security, the needs of the armed forces and the environment. The proposed roadmap to recovery “Innovators and Wealth Creators” seeks to offer the country an effective, efficient and rapid contribution to the route out of recession by concentrating Government investment in high-value, globally-competitive sectors with strong growth potential that can deliver high returns, especially through an increase in exports.
The UK’s aerospace, defence, security and space sectors represent 20 per cent of UK manufacturing employing over 500,000 people and contributing more than £60 billion per year to the UK economy. In both aerospace and defence the UK is the number one in Europe and second only to the US globally.
Ian Godden, Chairman of A|D|S, said: “The UK’s aerospace, defence, security and space sectors are global leaders and, with the right support from Government, can deliver a major boost to the nation’s number one priority - our economic recovery. The industry needs the Government and they need us. These sectors represent the best of British manufacturing and services. The Government and the country will reap the rewards if we invest in the best.
The industry can provide two levels of support: first of all through offering more efficient delivery of certain tasks currently conducted by Government; and secondly by continuing to contribute to the UK’s world-leading export base in advanced technologies.
To maintain our European leadership and strong global position in these sectors in competition with the USA, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and in future China and India we need to sustain investment in Research and Development and in skilled young people. Our ability to deliver impressive technology is not in question but future decisions from the Government will send strong signals to international investors and companies over whether the UK is a long-term base in an industry where projects can last 30 to 40 years. Support from the Government financially, in providing skilled young people from the education system and similar vocal support as provided by Presidents Sarkozy and Obama for their industries will deliver an increased return on that investment for Britain.
As well as the recovery and a rebalancing of our economy the new Government has several other key priorities such as national security, the needs of our armed forces – particularly in Afghanistan – and the environment. Our world-leading industrial sectors are crucial partners in these areas and we look forward to working in partnership with the Government to deliver for our fellow citizens, our magnificent armed forces and our shared surroundings. From innovative security systems at airports around the world to world class kit for our troops and from new aircraft that are more fuel efficient than a hybrid car to satellites that deliver improved capabilities with reduced environmental impacts, our members deliver on the country’s priorities. In partnership with the new Government we can deliver economically and environmentally for the benefit of the whole nation. A|D|S industries touch virtually every Parliamentary constituency in the UK and we will therefore be seeking to demonstrate to MPs the expertise and the ability to create export wealth that exists on their own doorsteps.”
