The first phase of Edinburgh Airport''s £40 million extension will be complete by November, owner BAA said.

According to the airport operator, the departure lounge will be ready this year, while 2011 will see the opening of the remainder of the terminal improvements.

BBA hopes the work will make the hub one of the most modern in Europe and said that business is carrying on as usual while the building work takes place.

The new section which will open to the public this year will have more shops, restaurants and bars.

Gordon Dewar, managing director of Edinburgh Airport, described the scheme as "complex and challenging" but added that the progress so far is good.

"Passengers will be able to enjoy the new-look Edinburgh Airport within a matter of months," he added.

The final 5,000 sq m development will include the new departure lounge, a purpose-built security search area and new restaurants and shops.
