First repair development agreement of its type signed
Munich, July 28, 2009 – Where others may resort to virgin parts to replace worn or damaged ones, the specialists at MTU Aero Engines prefer to repair: Using innovative techniques and drawing on decades of expertise in the field, Germany's leading engine manufacturer restores even heavily worn components to as-good-as-new condition. Now MTU has teamed up with GE Aviation, an operating unit of General Electric (GE), to develop new repairs for GE engine components. The two companies have concluded a Component Repair Development Agreement to form the basis of their cooperation.

"For MTU, this is the first agreement of this type that we have signed with one of the OEMs," says Dr. Stefan Weingartner, MTU Aero Engines President and CEO, Commercial Maintenance. "We are very pleased to have won GE as our partner." The transatlantic cooperation is not restricted to specific GE engine types, nor to specific GE engine assemblies. Comments Weingartner: "We can bring our experience, our technologies and our know-how to the table to benefit commercial and military programs." The agreement is for a term of ten years. It also provides that the new repair procedures jointly developed will be approved as OEM repairs and marketed by GE.

GE Aviation is a world-leading provider of commercial and military jet engines and components as well as avionics, electric power, and mechanical systems for aircraft. GE Aviation also has a global service network to support these offerings.

MTU Aero Engines, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, is Germany's leading engine manufacturer. Its official legal predecessor BMW Flugmotorenbau GmbH was founded in Munich in 1934. Technologically an industry leader, the company excels in low-pressure turbines and high-pressure compressors, as well as in manufacturing and repair techniques. In the military arena, MTU is Germany's industrial lead company for practically all engines flown by the country's armed force. Furthermore, the company is the German partner in the European engine programs. MTU Maintenance is the largest independent provider of commercial engine maintenance services worldwide.
