174 new trainees just at Hamburg location

Lufthansa Technik is stepping up its training commitment despite the ongoing crisis of the airline industry. As the 2009 training year gets under way, 307 young people will be taking their first step on the career ladder with the Lufthansa Technik Group in Germany, up from 285 in 2008. 174 trainees are starting today in Hamburg (141 in 2008), 96 have already started in Frankfurt including the Alzey site (107 in 2008), a further 30 are due to start in Munich and another seven in Arnstadt. In this way the company is taking the demographic trend into account and securing the manpower resources that it needs.

A total of 927 trainees are now employed at Lufthansa Technik Group in Germany. They were able to choose from among 16 different career paths and practice-oriented degree programs.

This year Lufthansa Technik Logistik is offering places for Business Persons specializing in Transport and Logistics Services for the first time. With 33 places in six practice-oriented degree programs, Lufthansa Technik is stepping up its collaboration with higher educational establishments. Another career path involving a Master of Science Mechatronics is planned to be introduced in 2010.

276 young people are starting on training programs directly at Lufthansa Technik, up from 259 in 2008. For another 18, Lufthansa Technik Logistik (LTL) is the designated training establishment. LTL is thus also expanding its commitment significantly. Six more apprentices are to be trained at Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey, the subsidiary which specializes in the overhaul of smaller jet and turboprop engines. N3 Engine Overhaul Services, the 50:50 joint venture with Rolls-Royce, is taking on seven new trainees.

In his speech welcoming the new trainees, Uwe Mukrasch, Chief Executive Human Resources and Information Management at Lufthansa Technik, said, “We are aware of our social responsibility to facilitate the transition to the world of work for the young generation. But as far as Lufthansa Technik is concerned, the qualification and motivation of its workforce are the critical foundation for its business success. This especially holds true at a time when the airline industry is in crisis. The right mixture of incentives and demands combined with the abiding fascination of work on every aspect of the aircraft are what makes Lufthansa Technik so attractive. We support young people, but we also expect them to be keen to work, flexible and willing to keep on learning.”

As well as the aircraft-specific trades, Lufthansa Technik also trains, for example, Tool Mechanics, Surface Coating Technicians and Business Persons specializing in Office Communication. Within the Lufthansa Technik Group, Specialists in Warehouse Logistics, Industrial Clerks and, for the first time, Business Persons specializing in Transport and Logistics Services are also employed.
